  • show Description
  • Twenty years after the feature-length adaptation of Richard Adams' best-seller, we return to the South Downs to retell the story of the rabbits of Watership Down. Whilst not quite as 'gritty' as the book or film, and reduced in natural detail by the necessity's of tv animation the 'Watership Down' series still hold true to the spirit of its source material. The rabbits and animals, to all intents and purposes, are real animals - not mere 'cartoons' or 'toons' - and an attempt has been made to incorporate the rabbits spiritual beliefs in Black Rabbit of Inle, Flayrah, and more.moreless

    • Hazel: How far is it to the top, Kehaar? Kehaar: Not far, if you fly. Long way, if you walk.

    • Pipkin: This must be all the flayrah in the world! Bigwig: So who's going to miss a few carrots, eh, Pipkin?

    • Bigwig: What if Fiver is wrong? We can't keep them going on dreams. Hazel: Dreams are all we have left, Bigwig.

    • Hazel: Oh, you were wonderful, Hannah! Bigwig: I... suppose mice and gulls aren't completely useless, after all. Hannah: Oh, praise indeed! And it's best we're gonna get from you, eh, Bigwig?

    • Pipkin: You're hungry, aren't you, Kehaar? Kehaar: Gulls always hungry!

    • Fiver: Something about Cowslip bothers you, doesn't it, Holly? Captain Holly: I never said that. Hazel: With Fiver, you don't have to.

    • Pipkin; Do you have the scent of alfalfa, Bigwig? Bigwig: It's "Efrafa", and no, I haven't.

    • Hawkbit: What's gotten into Strawberry? He was so happy to be with us. You'd think he'd help out a bit! Hazel: He's celebrating his freedom, Hawkbit. We just have to be patient. Hawkbit: You can be patient, I'll be annoyed!

    Notes (29)

    • First appearance of Cowslip, and the Warren of the Shining Wires.

    • First appearance of Silverweed, Cowslip's mystic. Though he serves only a minor role here, he will play a much greater part in season three, from "Redstone Falls" onward.

    • Pipkin keeps confusing Efrafa (Militant Warren Dictatorship) with Alfalfa (Common Livestock Feed).

    • Blackavar has been animated to resemble his voice actor, Stephen Gately.

    • Stephen Gately, who voices Blackavar, also performed the show's main theme, "Bright Eyes".

    • From this episode onward, a new opening is used, which features a montage of scenes from previous and upcoming episodes.

    • The song "Thank You, Stars" by Cerys Matthews of the pop group Catatonia is heard during the Hazel/Primrose montage.

    • Richard Briers, who voices Captain Broom, previously voiced Fiver in the Watership Down film.

    Trivia (14)

    • In the original book, Blackberry was a male rabbit.

    • Woundwort is being voiced by John Hurt, the same man that was doing Hazel's voice in the Watership Down movie from 1978.

    • The scratch marks Woundwort makes on Bigwig's front leg disappears after he gets on the boat.

    • In one scene in the caverns Hazel, Fiver & Hawkbit pass through a tunnel lined with some kind of crystals and some hanging sheath that looks like either glass or ice. It is unlikely that ice could form down there and glass would be impossible and the North downs aren't volcanic land, so the crystals can't be quartz or anything igneous; since Hawkbit smashed a sheath when sliding to a halt after a psychotically-induced dash the most logical solution is that the crystals are gypsum.

    • When interrogating Campion, Vervain is briefly seen walking on his hind legs.

    • When Dandelion is organising Pipkin's animal friends, his fur is a darker brown then usual.

    • When Hazel and the others prepare to leave, they take turnips from the flayrah pile. But when they are outside, they are carrying carrots.

    • When the Watership Down rabbits are sleeping, Hawkbit and Fiver's heads are miscolored.
