    • Jake: (seeing that Joan is staring at him) What? You told me to do this. Joan: You're not going to wear that shirt tonight when you meet my sister for the first time, are you? (Joan makes a face) Jake: Apparently not. Joan: I mean, the pants are okay, but that, that shirt -- I mean, if Tom Brokaw and Larry King gave birth to a shirt, it would look like that.

    • Jake: Joanie, you're out of coffee filters. Joan: (from the bedroom) Ooh, use the cupcake papers! Jake: (peeling off one wrapper- it is very small) Well, I guess we're going to have very small cups of coffee this morning.

    Notes (29)

    • Location: Chicago Studio City, 5660 W. Taylor

    • 'What About Joan' was shot entirely on location in Chicago and was, as they say, filmed before a live studio audience.

    • This episode received a 10.5/16 Nielson rating, debuting as the No. 1 program on Tuesday night in Adults 18-49, representing ABC's most watched mid-season bow in 3 years and qualifies as the only series ever to build on "Dharma & Greg" among total viewers. The premiere had 14.9 million viewers.

    • Episode writer and series creator Gwen Macsai was two years ahead of Joan when both attended Evanston Township High School.

    • The series will be shot entirely in Chicago and is the first time a sitcom has taped its entirety anywhere besides New York and Los Angeles. Joan Cusack only agreed to do the show if it was taped in Chicago (so she can spend time with her family).

    • According to Nielsen, the mid-season sitcom topped its 9:30 p.m. competition in total viewers (13.06 million) and in the key demographic of adults 18-49 (5.8/15). But those numbers were off 12 percent and 15 percent, respectively, from the show's debut.

    • With this episode "What About Joan" won its half-hour timeslot by 4 shares among 18-49 viewers for the second straight week.

    • This episode received an overnight Nielson rating of 9.5/14, which is (again) higher than lead-in "Dharma & Greg" which received a 9.3/14.
