“Why would you get involved in something so potentially messy and complicated when you don’t have to?”
This is going to be a slightly special episode of Wonderfalls; you can tell by the first scene. Instead of opening in the shop, the Tyler home or the bar, we have a sweaty Eric fixing the aerial on Jaye’s trailer whilst she and Mahandra sip iced drinks in the sun. So far, so summery, sexy and sly – is this the episode where Eric and Jaye will finally Get It On? We have a bit of a gender reversal here – Jaye just wants to look at Eric’s naked torso, whilst Eric wants a full blown treacly romance. Running concurrently with the will-they-won’t-they story is the morality tale* of the big haired fur-coat-and-no-knickers Russianista and the small annoying boy with the pointy teeth and mother issues. Peter’s childish attitude to love and relationships is compared to Jaye’s juvenile fear of commitment. Katya spots this and starts to make her move on Eric whilst Peter swaps allegiance and after Jaye tells him off, falls for her.
Of course, after some fake black eyes and pseudo-kidnappings, adventures with fish jello and a horrible red sports car, we get The Kiss - the minor twist being that Jaye is the one instigating the kissing after being made jealous, angry and worried. She’s the kind of gal who needs a big prod up the backside and some talking animals to get her to do anything. For once, the inanimate object without a larynx was helping both a stranger and Jaye.
However, the conclusions did raise some questions – would Peter get a major Oedipus complex after the woman he electronically loved became his step-mother? What will happen if and/or when Heidi comes looking for Eric? And most importantly – what’s Mouthbreather going to do when he finds out about all the unauthorised time off Jaye has been taking?
