  • well...

  • Two Amazon tribes join forces to wage war against the Romans, but when Eve – banished from Amazon lands for her past as Livia – returns to try and make amends, she is captured and sentenced to death. One of the season's weaker episodes...

  • This episode has the feeling of tying up a number of loose ends... A plot that lacks the strength of other episodes in the season is made up for by strong action scenes, and the episode (ultimately) serves its' purpose.

  • Trivia & Quotes
  • Quotes (5)

    • Eve: (refusing Xena's company on her journey) No. I need to do this on my own. Goodbye. Xena: (watches her leave, and then calls after her) Stay out of trouble!

    • Varia: I don't want to fight you. Xena: You got that right.

    • Ares: Remember what the scorpion said. Xena: Ares, the scorpion drowned!

    • Gbarielle: There's wisdom in the Amazon ways. Xena: Like the time they painted you blue and made you howl at the moon to consecrate your Queenliness?

    • Ares: (Claps after Xena ruins his plan for the Amazons) You had this planned all along. (Laughs) You are so good. Xena: It's what I do. Ares: And I wouldn't have it any other way.

    Notes (9)

    • Regarding whether or not Livia actually threw the slaves overboard, during an interview Adrienne Wilkinson said she intitally assumed that Ares was lying but when she asked Rob Tapert about it he confirmed that Ares was telling the truth.

    • The original script of "The God You Know" showed Caligula's successor Claudius, who was in love with Eve. This scene in the earlier episode explains the sudden Roman support of Eve in this episode.

    • This is the only flashback heavy episode where the flashback stories concern someone besides Xena.

    • The scene with Ares in the field was originally written as taking place in an old Temple of Artemis, which Ares was having redone for him by the Amazons.

    • They knew that they wanted to put Eve on trial for her crimes, but they weren't sure where. They considered having her trial in the Senate of Rome.

    Trivia (5)

    • This is the last appearance of Adrienne Wilkinson as Eve on the series. Eve sets off to spread Eli's teachings in the East. There was discussion of having Eve appear in "A Friend in Need", but it was decided that it would be too clunky.

    • After Xena tells Varia to kill her first if she truly wants vengeance, Varia uses Livia's move to throw Xena to the ground. Perhaps this is what made her realise that Xena was right about her path turning her into the same monster Livia was.

    • Xena mentions Gabrielle's Amazon Queen initiation ritual (howling at the moon) from "Kindred Spirits".

    • It's odd that Gabrielle cites the Amazon system in telling Xena that she cannot fight in her place since it was Gabrielle who made the royal challenge. Xena did exactly that in Season 1's "Hooves and Harlots". Of course, back then Gabrielle didn't know how to fight, and the challenge would not have been fair if she had had to fight Melosa herself. This time, there was no such excuse for passing this duty to Xena.

    • Goof: When Eve kills Varia's sister, there is a reflection of Eve in her victim's eyes. But the image of Eve is the same as the attack, when it should be a mirror opposite reflection.

    Allusions (3)

    • The Amazon leaders that appear in this episode and the next ("To Helicon and Back") contain some interesting allusions in their names: *Mawu-Ka is the African leader. In Dahomey mythology (from Benin, Africa), Mawu is a creator goddess associated with the moon. Mawu-Ka means "People of Mawu". *Kanae is the Polynesian leader. In a Polynesian legend, Kanae is the name of a flying fish who is a friend of the Ponaturi, (goblins who live under the sea). *Gwyn-Teir is the Celtic leader. Gwen Teirbron is a Welsh saint, connected with fertility and motherhood.

    • The new Roman emperor is named to be Claudius. This refers to Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, or Claudius I, who took over after his nephew Caligula's death in 41 CE. He was the only adult male survivor of the family at that point (Roman emperors had the habit of killing those who might be a threat to their rule), but had been viewed as a non-threat due to some physical, and possibly mental, disability. After rising to power, however, Claudius claimed that he had exaggerated his ailments to avoid assassination. He proved to have some skills as a leader, as the empire expanded during his reign, including the conquest of Britain.

    • The Scorpion and the Swan The story of the scorpion and the frog (changed to a swan for Xena) is one of Aesop's Fables. Aesop was a Greek who lived at the same time as the famous Lyric Poet Sappho.
