Seeing a Duel Disk and deck, Yugi thinks he must be a duelist, Jaden confirms this as he says he's on his way for his entrance exams for the Duel Academy. Yugi decides to give him a Winged Kuriboh card, saying it is a lucky card, and he wishes Jaden luck on his exams as he runs off.As Jaden enters the school, he befriends Alexis Rhodes, Syrus Truesdale, Bastion Misawa, Zane Truesdale, and Chazz Princeton. Together they experience many adventures while trying to stop evil from spreading! • Jaden: Uh. Hey wait! Thank you! I'll make you proud. (Yugi gives him a thumbs-up) Uh. (Stares at the card and hears Kuriboh's voice What was that? Uh oh the exam! (Starts running) I cant be the next King of Games if I'm late to the games!

    • One of Chazz's Cronies: Hey this kid's got some rip huh Chazz? (Chazz gets a little angry) Crowler: Duel Disk on. (Pushes button on Duel Disk) Jaden: Wow that's pretty sweet teach. How do I get one of those cool blue duel blazers? Crowler: Oh a lot of hard work and extremely high marks.

    • Jaden: (After beating Crowler)That's game. So I guess I pass, huh teach.

    • Jaden: (running) I can't be the next king of games if I'm late to the games!

    • Yugi: You're a duelist, aren't you? Jaden: Huh? Yep. I'm just going to try out at the Academy. Yugi: Ha. You don't say? Jaden: Yeah! (laughs lightly, then realizes that it was Yugi that he's talking to) Hey, you're... Yugi: Why don't you take this? Something tells me it belongs with you. (he hands Jaden a card) Jaden: Wow... for real? Yugi: Good luck.

    • Crowler: So, what is your name? Jaden: Uh, Jaden. Jaden Yuki. Crowler: Well, Uh Jaden Yuki, I am Dr. Vellian Crowler, Chair of Department of Techniques here at Duel Academy. Jaden: Wow, I had no idea. From the way you are dressed, I was thinking you were some weird academy majorette or cheerleader. One of Chazz's Cronies: You know, now that he mentions it...

    • Alexis: The kid's showing some backbone. Zane: There won't be much left of it to show after this.

    • Alexis: (when Crowler summons Ancient Gear Golem) There it is! His legendary rare card! Zane: I'd say we're about to find out just what makes it so legendary.

    Notes (957)

    • Yugi appears in this episode. However, we do not get to see above his nose, except from behind. What we do see of his hair seems to indicate that he now wears his hair like the Pharaoh did. His voice now matches the Pharaoh's.

    • In the original version Crowler speaks with a stereotypical Italian accent but in the dub it's British.

    • Featured Duel: Jaden vs Dr Crowler

    • Apparently, the phony "fusion monsters can't attack in the turn they're summoned" rule from Season 2 onward of the original series has been scrapped.

    • Instead of "It's time to duel," the GX catchphrase is "Get your game on!"

    • As homage to the first series, some GX characters bear likenesses, personalities, or other traits similar to characters from the previous YuGiOh! show.

    • Despite his appearance, Crowler is a man.

    • Jaden gets his card partner: Winged Kuriboh

    Trivia (330)

    • When Bastion activates Ring of Destruction, he says it destroys a Monster in attack mode. In the real game, the mode doesn't matter; it only needs to be face-up.

    • When the Ancient Gear Golem attacked Winged Kuriboh, Jaden should have lost the match; Winged Kuriboh's ability to negate battle damage only activates after it is destroyed, meaning Jaden should have taken the damage to his life points as soon as Ancient Gear Golem attacked it.

    • In Japan when Jaden and Syrus see Chumley for the first time, they don't scream because he's big, it's because when they look at him they see him as a koala.

    • Inconsistent editing: When Alexis, Jasmine, and Mindy were in the bath, 4kids added swimsuits because they weren't wearing anything in the original. But when Jasmine and Mindy come outside to see what the disturbance (Syrus trespassing in the girls' dorms) is, they're covered by towels, and not wearing bathing suits.

    • Alexis equips Fusion Weapon to Cyber Blader, a Level 7 monster. Fusion Weapon can only be equipped to Level 6 or lower Fusion Monsters.

    • When Jaden comes in to find Syrus is gone he said he had left the outhouse, but was drying his hair.

    • In the original version, Jaden's name was written on his boots.

    • When Jaden and Chazz started their duel their were about 8 other pairs of duelists next to them also taking their field tests, but for some reason none of them had any cards out. Also, after Jaden and Chazz finished their duel all of those other duelists were gone.

    Allusions (208)

    • Zane and Bastion: Kaiba Zane and Bastion are a lot like Kaiba from the first animated Yu-Gi-Oh! series in their own way; Zane is calm and collected like Kaiba, while Bastion sounds like him and is highly intelligent. Bastion also uses Vorse Raider and Ring of Destruction, like Kaiba.

    • Chumley's nose resembles a nose of a koala bear.

    • Lowest Dorm: Slifer The lowest dorm is Slifer Red because Duel Academy was built by Seto Kaiba and his rival was the Pharaoh, who's first Egyptian God card was Slifer the Sky Dragon.

    • Obelisk, Ra, and Slifer: The three dormitories, with their own reputations, statuses, and rivalries, is similar to the 4-house structure of the Harry Potter series.

    • Syrus: Do you think maybe we are connecting someway? Like you were an Ancient Egyptian Pharaoh, and I was the High Priest Seto?
This is an obvious and humorous reference to the original Yu Gi Oh! series. How Yugi's past life was as a Pharaoh and Kaiba's past life as a High Priest.

    • Title Pun: A Lesson in Love

    • Professor Banner: I will teach you things about dueling that some consider to be unnatural. This is almost word for word what Chancellor Palpatine told Anakin in Star Wars Episode Three: Revenge Of The Sith.

    • This is similar to the time Yugi Moto had to duel Duke Devlin for Joey's freedom in the original series' cliffhanger "Dungeon Dice Monsters."
