    • (Narration at the beginning of episode) Narrator: Long ago, when the pyramids were still young, Egyptian kings played a game of great and terrible power. But these shadow games erupted into a war that threatened to destroy the entire world, until a brave and powerful pharaoh locked the magic away, imprisoning it within the mystical Millennium Items. Now, five thousand years later, a boy named Yugi unlocks the secret of the Millennium Puzzle. He is infused with ancient magical energies, for destiny has chosen him to defend the world from the return of the shadow games, just as the brave pharaoh did, five thousand years ago.

    • (Tristan steps in the middle of a duel.) Joey: Hey, Tristan. Yugi's teaching me how to play Duel Monsters. Tristan: Drooling monsters? Joey: (pushes Tristan away from his view) Duel Monsters, you nimrod!

    • Kaiba: But...but how? How could I have lost to him!? Yugi: Kaiba, if you truly want to know, open your mind!

    • Kaiba: Exodia!? It... it's not possible! No one's ever been able to call him!

    • Joey: Hey, are you into Duel Monsters, too? This is perfect! Maybe we could all duel together sometime! Kaiba: Me? Duel you? I would have more of a challenge playing solitaire.

    Notes (4)

    • In Japan, this was actually the beginning of the second animé to involve Yugi and the gang. The original 'Yuugiou' series, adapting manga volumes 1 to 7, proved less popular with fans so when the manga changed direction the animé restarted. Consequently, some key points such as Yugi and Kaiba's duel and the first encounter with Yami Bakura had to be rewritten for the sake of continuity.

    • In the manga, after losing to Yugi Kaiba is in a coma for 6 months.

    • In the manga, this duel between Yugi and Kaiba never happened as it would have been a repeat of the final Death-T duel. However because the animé adaptation of Death-T was part of the cancelled Yu-Gi-Oh! series produced by TOEI Animation it was necessary to reanimate the duel for the start of TV Tokyo's Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters series.

    • This episode was originally scheduled to air on September 15, 2001, but due to the tragic events of 9/11 the episode was rescheduled to its later date.

    Trivia (6)

    • The card "Swords of Revealing Light" shown in this episode is working much differently from its real life counterpart: the "true" one stops every attack from any enemy monster for 3 turns, including the ones summoned after the card has been played. Instead, in this episode Seto starts attacking Yugi right away with freshly summoned monsters, and only the 2 dragons already in play are affected by the card.

    • This is the only time in the series that Yugi summons Exodia

    • When Yugi draws the Left Arm Of The Forbidden One, he already had it in his hand a few turns ago. In the Japanese version he already had the Right Arm Of The Forbidden One already then a couple of draws later Yugi will draw the Left Arm Of The Forbidden One later on.

    • When Yugi summons Exodia, its five pointed star is given more points in the dub. The card in the original version also does not have the colorful background to hide the five-star points.

    • When Yami takes place of Yugi before the duel, Kaiba is stunned for a few seconds, but NEVER questions why they're 2 Yugi's through the whole series. Wouldnt he ever wonder why one is taller than the other and only appears in duels/competitions?

    • Duel Monsters was originally called Magic and Wizards in the manga, and was based off the idea of the card game Magic: the Gathering.
