The producers and cast of The Closer discuss casting, the origins of the show, and what makes this popular crime show stand out from the rest. This William S. Paley Television Festival evening honors The Closer, a drama series about LAPD Deputy Police Chief Brenda Johnson, a hard-nosed interrogator in the Priority Homicide Division who excels at closing cases. Barbara Dixon (director, The Paley Center for Media, Los Angeles) welcomes the audience and moderates the following panelists: cast members Michael Paul Chan (Lt. Mike Tao), Gina Ravera (Det. Irene Daniels), Raymond Cruz (Det. Julio Sanchez), G.W. Bailey (Det. Lt. Provenza), Kyra Sedgwick (Deputy Chief Brenda Johnson), J.K. Simmons (Asst. Police Chief Will Pope), Tony Denison (Det. Andy Flynn), and Corey Reynolds (Sgt. David Gabriel); executive producer/creator/writer James Duff; executive producer Greer Shephard; executive producer/director Michael M. Robin; producer Andrew J. Sacks; and consulting producer Gil Garcetti. The panelists discuss the genesis of the show, how each actor came to be cast on the show, how Sedgwick made the Brenda character "real" by interpreting her as "deeply flawed," what separates the show from other, more "procedural," crime dramas, Garcetti's job in keeping the show realistic, behavior behind the scenes amongst cast and crew, and how the show will eventually evolve in terms of conflicts and antagonisms.moreless
