Houston, Texas: July
A housewife goes outside and talks to her neighbor, who is watering his pool. He politely refuses her offer of lemonade, but notices that his decorative pool is filled with blood. Later in the house, he’s scrubbing away blood that is all over the kitchen when the doorbell rings. The police arrive in response to the woman’s call and the man, Joe Sprig, invites them in. They find three dead women and the police take Joe away. He claims the Lord told him to clean up the place.
Ann Arbor, Michigan: August
A battered wife meets with a councilor at a shelter, and the councilor, Anne, says the wife should go to see her sister in Jacksonville, Florida. However, the wife says that she’s been unable to reach her sister or daughter.
At a home, Anne, her mother Bella, and her daughter Amy, are preparing for the return of Anne’s husband Alan while the newscast covers a recent series of deaths of women across the world. Anne notes that one series of killings occurred in Florida. Alan and his brother, Barney, arrive and over supper talk about how Alan has received an award for dealing with an insect pest, the cane fly. Bella, an epidemiologist, warns that tampering with nature can be dangerous, and then is interrupted by a call. She’s called away to Jacksonville on a top secret mission. As she leaves, Amy spots a falling star overhead.
Later, Amy is in bed while Alan and Anne make love in the next room. Meanwhile, Barney studies patterns of violence along the Gulf Coast.
Jacksonville, Florida: August
Bella and her escort arrive outside Jacksonville but are halted by the military, who note there have been 1,100 homicides: all of women. She asks to see the soldier who killed a stripper, and asks him about a street preacher, Rodney Bearden, who was in the streets of Jacksonville leading the protests against women. The soldier says how he saw Bearden in the bar, clutching a piece of barbed wire in his fist. When the stripper came on to him, Beardon attacked and wounded her before the bartender shot him down. The soldier then felt compelled by God to finish the job. The soldier tries to attack Bella through the bars and she barely gets away.
Bella calls Barney, who has determined the pattern of killings are following a straight line east-to-west across the Horse Latitudes. Bella concludes it is triggered by sexual arousal. In the Jacksonville station, the soldiers and officials are reading over Bearden’s literature. Bella uses the Internet to determine the global pattern and the mayor and the others start going on about the will of the Lord. The mayor kills Bella and has one of the soldiers dispose of her.
In Ann Arbor, a FBI agent calls on Alan to go with him and informs the couple that Bella is dead.
Washington, D.C.: September
Alan and Barney give a demonstration of how they tampered with insect breeding patterns via an enzyme, and how the current outbreak of violence shows that someone has designed a human-specific version. Alan insists it’s a deliberate effort to exterminate the human race, and says they need to evacuate all females south of the 31st parallel. Barney says they need to administer chemical castration to any men in contact with the women. The military are reluctant until Barney notes the alternative is actual castration.
Anne is converting her women’s shelter into a full-scale home for women, and talks to Amy about using their home for more women. Some construction workers hit on Amy and Anne tries to get her out of there. A construction worker comes after them as they drive away, and almost hits another man. He drives away, running over two women in the process.
Alan and Barney are testing soldiers by exposing them to sexual videos, and they get word that the plague is spreading north. Barney tells Alan to go to Ann Arbor to be with his family, and he refuses to take the chemical castration shot for now. Alan figures she can spot any symptoms in time, and Barney says he’s taken the shots.
At the airport, Alan flies into a rage against the female travel agent when she can’t get him on a flight. He finally gets on a scheduled plane and arrives in Ann Arbor that night where Amy greets him. He and Anne get Amy into bed and then head for the bedroom to make love until Alan grabs a knife… and wakes up to realize he’s dreaming. Another man kills a woman in the back of the plane. As the plane starts to descend, another woman starts screaming and a steward quickly and casually breaks her neck.
After he lands, Alan calls Anne to tell her he’s going directly to the lab. He tells her to get a gun, head north, and shoot him if she sees him again.
Ontario, Canada: October
Anne and Amy are practicing small arms practice in the woods. They drive back to Uncle Barney’s cabin rental and Amy realizes they won’t ever be going home.. They drive up and spot Alan’s car, and Amy goes running in. Anne grabs her gun and comes in to find Alan hugging his daughter. He says they have a cure but she wonders why Barney didn’t call and holds a gun on her husband. She tries to call Barney but gets his answering machine. Amy insists on going with her father but Alan gropes her and then shoves her aside to come at Anne. He charges at her and she shoots him in first one leg and then the other.
Anne drives away with Amy, with Amy insisting Alan was fine. Anne explains what she had to do but Amy isn’t satisfied. Later, Anne pulls over while Amy is sleeping, takes her gun, and gets out of the car. She goes into the woods but Amy wakes up and drives back to the cabin.
The next morning, Anne finally gets back to the cabin and finds her daughter dead. She wakes up in a hospital where Barney tries to comfort her. He explains that things have deteriorated, and then disguises her as a man. He takes her out past corpses and male religious maniacs.
Stewart, British Columbia: October
Men are gathered at a grocery store and discussing how they saw glowing “angels.” Anne is there, still disguised, and buys what medicine she can. She goes to see Barney, who has pneumonia and is living in the woods in a tent. Barney insists that someone did it all to them.
Stewart, British Columbia, November
Anne buries Barney and goes to the grocery store, where the men are discussing how they had to kill their sons. Anne drives away but the men follow her in a truck. She tries to lose them but she’s forced to abandon her car and they follow her into the forest. She spots a bright light and tries to hide, but the men and their dogs (and Anne) spot the glowing “angels.” When one of the men tries to shoot them, the “angel” fires a beam of light from its hand, killing him. The other one goes into a religious rant and they kill him too. They take a blood sample from each corpse and perform experiments.
Later, Anne looks up to the sky where she sees a falling star… and realizes that the “angels” are there to eliminate mankind as pests.
