Mary Miller Fox ?Many who watched McMillan and Wife over
the years overlooked this attractive, and talented young lady, who is the sister of Susan Saint James, and often played her double,or stand in,as well as playing bit parts.Where is she now? Ask hide « show »

Mary Miller Fox played many roles in the McMillan and
Wife series. Her real name is Mary Mercedes Miller, younger sister
of Susan Saint James {born Susan Jane Miller}. Mary played short parts that sometimes consisted of
being a double,or stand in for Susan.Mary also played small parts in several of the McMillan episodes. If you look carefully for her,you will see the sisterly resemblance, when next to Susan in a scene. Though younger, she had the long brown hair, approximate height, complexion,as her lovely older sister, except her
lovely blue eyes are about the only give away in likeness in a closeup. Should have been a star !

A television series based on the the popular "Thin Man" movies. hide « show »

A classic series from Universal Studios and was part of The NBC Sunday Night Mystery Movies. This show "rotated" along with McCloud and Columbo. Rock Hudson who was a star in movies from the 1950's and 1960's. Makes his small screen debut in this series as San Francisco Police Commissioner Stuart McMillan. Susan St. James played the wife Sally McMillan. They both have a penchant for crime. when they often go to lavish parties or get togethers there is always a crime involved. They are considered the Nick and Nora Charles of the 1970's.

There is also a list of guest stars as well. including, Rosie Grier, Buddy Hackett, Sheree North, Linda Evans, Van Johnson, Dabney Coleman and many others.

A terrific set-piece of the 1970s...detective shows don't get much better than this! hide « show »

I only remember the latter-day "McMillan & Wife", with Rock Hudson clean-shaven...so it was a surprise for me to see in the very first episode of season one (which I purchased on DVD), the scraggily-mustache of Mac. However, I thoroughly enjoyed this show...and while it was well before my time, I can still remember watching this, "McCloud", & "Colombo" weekday mornings when I was younger. I continue to be intrigued with each episode, and look forward to season 2 on DVD.

    8.5 Great

Hudson, St James & Walker - what more do you want? Well, yeah, there's mystery too... and not just about Hudson's personal life! hide « show »

Rock Hudson comes out swingin in '70s San Francisco in the lead role of Police Commisioner McMillan. Former model with comedic edge Susan St James is his perfect foil as wife Sally (86 to Hudson's 99, who got to guest host SNL and most recently turned up on The Drew Carey Show). There was also wisecracking housekeeper Mildred, played to perfection by Nancy Walker (who took the San Fran demographic and ran with it in later life, playing camp icon Ida Morgenstein in Rhoda and then directiong Village People's You Can't Stop The Music film). Not only were Hudson and St James' outfits immaculately stylish (St James was a model at one time) but so was the writing (one ep penned by Steven Bocho) and direction (Daniel Petrie and John Astin amongst the scipt team). Fleshing out the suspenseful mysteries was an extremely well-put-together supporting cast: John Shuck as police sidekick Enright (he went to oddball robo-com Holmes & Yoyo), Gloria Stroock (she guested on Holmes & Yoyo later...), Martha Raye as Mildred's sister and, of course former Addams Family and Batman star Astin. Always fun, often chilling and only let down by drearily bowing out as just McMillan minus St James and Walker, with Hudson as a single man in San Fran and not once seen in the Castro.

McMillan and Wife is about a very pro-active San Francisco Police commissioner and his Busy Body wife Sally. hide « show »

One of my favorites. Which belong to a sub group of detective/mystery show I call Busy Body Mystery's. In this case it is a wife who is the busy body wannabe cop. First I want to say this show really brings back the 70's for me. Forget the Brady Bunch or those phony 70's shows. Take a look at McMillan and wife to see what people were really wearing back in the 70's down to Sally's various hair styles. Also the interior shots of their various condos were right on too. Whoever did the costumes and the designs on the show knew their jobs.
I also liked the way the writers showed them as a couple. Even though there is a obvious age difference they complimented each other. For the 70's it was very racy because as the viewer you knew they were having a lot of sex. I loved that. One episode Sally had to sleep on the floor until she got a bed board. She mentioned she couldn't sleep on the floor anymore. Well the person she was talking to said something like well at least your husband can sleep in the bed. She looked at them as to say he is on the floor with me. They other person asks why would he sleep on the floor with her and she gave this very telling look.
Lt. Enright, McMillans right hand man was not as popular with me as he was with other viewers. He was ok but the character seemed too wishy washy for my taste. Mildred the housekeeper who I think use to work for McMillans family was hilarious. She actually is the head of the household and she should be running the police force.
McMillan has got to be the most pro active commissioner known to man. THis guy went out and solved cases, got shot at, chased down suspects. And his wife Sally went along with him. Sometimes she even solves the case herself! Pure escapist entertainment, and I loved it.
The complaints I have is that if I remember correctly Sally was pregnant twice. I think the writers wanted to bring a child in the story and they then nixed it. In the first show Sally is working with kids in a hospital, so maybe they thought her having her own child would work out too. Then she is pregnant again and she disappears, we never see the baby. Later shows mention that Sally and the baby got killed in a plane crash. Then the show just turns into McMillan and goes straight downhill. But before that the show is fun and to me a real 70's TV.
