It's the hospital greens vs. the corporate grays when two iconoclastic doctors fight the HMO and hospital brass. Set in a fictional San Francisco hospital, Mission General, MDs highlights the lives and dedication of a few good doctors who find themselves battling a heartless health care system obsessed with the bottom line.
Dr. Robert Dalgety (John Hannah) and Dr. Bruce Kellerman (William Fichtner) are two renegade surgeons ¡ª subversive, witty and irrepressible ¡ª working together in a mega-sized, mega-frugal, aging HMO. They buck the system any way they can, even admitting an uninsured woman as a corpse so they can do her surgery under the guise of performing an autopsy.
Dr. Kellerman, is head of cardio-thoracic surgery; he knows the system and isn't afraid to play it to benefit his patients. The divorced Dr. Kellerman is in a custody dispute with his wife over their young son. The rogueish Dalgety is a war-trained trauma specialist who shares Kellerman's disdain for the system.
Leslie Stefanson portrays the new administrator, Shelly Pangborn. She's confident and enthusiastic, but she's a former theme park manager ¡ª and gets sick at the sight of the sickly ¡ª so her struggle for respect is an uphill battle.
Aunjanue Ellis portrays by-the-book attending physician Dr. Quinn Joyner, whom Kellerman secretly admires ¡ª and lusts after. Jane Lynch is Nurse "Doctor" Poole, an uptight nurse with a Ph. D. in management whose main concern is profit. Robert Joy portrays assistant administrator Frank Coones. He simultaneously sucks up to Pangborn, while distributing topless photos of her throughout the hospital. Michaela Conlin portrays sensitive, naive intern Dr. Maggie Yang. She becomes a natural, but nervous, ally of Kellerman and Dalgety.
