Family Portrait

Claire makes an effort to take a new family portrait, but everybody is too busy to cooperate: Gloria and Manny go with Phil and Alex to a Lakers game and share an awkward moment on the jumbotron, Cameron gets a job as a wedding singer while Mitchell takes care of Lilly and a stray pigeon, and Luke interviews Jay for a school project.

Aired: 05/19/10

Show Summary

This mockumentary explores the many different types of a modern family through the stories of a gay couple, comprised of Mitchell and Cameron, and their daughter Lily, a straight couple, comprised of Phil and Claire, and their three kids, Haley, Alex, and Luke, and a multicultural couple, which isMore comprised of Jay and Gloria, and their son Manny. These three types of families are being taped by a Dutch documentary crew who are using them for an upcoming reality-based television series due to air in The Netherlands.

This is the only new show I watched this season. hide show

It really shouldn't surprise people how fantastic Modern Family is; it comes from the creators of 'Frasier' and 'Just Shoot Me!' (among other classic sitcoms). These are people who know how to create relatable characters and put them in situations that are made funny not because the conflict itself is funny, but how the characters deal with the situations are funny.

You've got the nuclear Dunphy family with the standard husband, wife and 3 kids; then the ageing divorcee with a new feisty Latino wife and her wordly son; then the gay couple who've just adopted a Vietnamese girl. They're all related; this is the Modern Family.

First and foremost, the writing is incredibly sharp yet not overly clever (a problem which plagued the otherwise-brilliant "Arrested Development"). What hits me about so much other comedy these days, is that when you strip away your own laughter (or the horrendous canned laughter of shows still persisting in the multi-cam format), most 'humour' is insult-based and would actually destroy friendships/relationships.

However on Modern Family, there's always an undercurrent of genuine affection to any joke, even (say) the bickering between the Dunphy kids, or Jay's lack of understanding of the Columbian culture of his new wife. And though I'm not gay myself, the portrayal of Cam and Mitchell as a normal couple struggling with raising a baby - rather than playing on gay stereotypes for laughs - is a welcome change from the caricatures plaguing the entire run of 'Will & Grace'.

In summary, Modern Family has now overtaken The Big Bang Theory, Chuck and How I met your Mother as my favourite comedy. I can only hope it wins Best Comedy at the Emmy's next month.

One word cannot describe how great this comedy is. hide show

ABC made a bunch of great new shows this year, but Modern Family just seperates itself from the rest. It does represent a modern family and the story line is great. It shows the middle class of America and that is what many viewers want to watch. Modern Family will go for many seasons and many others and I will watch it every week. I wish it good luck. Now I'm writing this because the reviews have to be 100 words long. So stupid. Great reviews don't have to take up pages and pages of paper. blah blah blah blah.

I watched it every week because others liked it. Now I gotta shout "Hate it!!!" hide show

I gave it the whole first season to grow on me. But after 24 episodes I am still just as infuriated by these imbecilic characters! I despise everyone but the grandfather's family and the other kids. The remaining adults infuriate me rather than entertain me. I probably could not be around them in real life because I would be so tempted to get violent with them. But without them the rest of the characters are normal-boring. So what to do? I for one have my own personal solution. I'm going to stop watching this show. Hahaha! It's so easy! Let those who like it have it! Yay, I'm gonna get my own TV and be anti-social with my family over a TV show! ...Dang.

This show is magnificently funny, with a hugely endearing cast. hide show

The best sitcom on television by a mile. I love the mockumentary style of tv shows that was popularised (as far as I know) by the The Office UK, and subsequently in The Office US. I love this style because I feel more directly connected to the characters. I actually love every single one of the main characters in Modern Family. Every. Single. One. The writing and acting are very on-key.

Parks and Recreationg with Rashida Jones is another mockumentary-style tv show which I also enjoy a lot. You should check it out if you like this. Do it now!
