Mr. Monk and the Candidate (1)Episode Number: 1 Season Num: 1 First Aired: Friday July 12, 2002 Prod Code: T1100A |
Former police inspector Adrian Monk is called in as a private consultant to investigate the murder of a young woman and then the attempted assassination of a mayoral candidate.
| Writer: | Andy Breckman |
| Director: | Dean Parisot |
| Star: | Tony Shalhoub (Adrian Monk), Bitty Schram (Sharona Fleming), Jason Gray-Stanford (Lt. Randall Disher), Ted Levine (Captain Leland Stottlemeyer) |
| Recurring Role: | Kane Ritchotte (Benjy), Stanley Kamel (Dr. Charles Kroger) |
| Guest Star: | Vincent Gale (Jesse Goodman), Mary Black (Mrs. Street), Shawn Reis (Ian Sykes), Fred Ewanuick (Jake), Christopher Shyer (Carl), Rob LaBelle (Sheldon Burger), Megan McKinnon (Little Girl with a Cold), Gail O'Grady (Miranda St. Claire), Stellina Rusich (Trudy Monk), Michael Hogan (Warren St. Claire), Ben Bass (Gavin Lloyd) |
This is the only episode where Stanley Kamel's (Dr. Charles Kroger) name is listed in the opening credits.
(edit)
The show was originally to be made for ABC with Michael Richards starring. When he pulled out, so did ABC.
(edit)
Sharona's son, Benjy, played by American child actor Kane Ritchotte in the pilot (parts one and two), is played by a young Canadian, Max Morrow, in later season-one episodes. Kane resumes the role in season two and the first half of season three.
(edit)
Stottlemeyer's lieutenant is listed in the credits for the pilot as Lt. Deacon, but he's referred to in later episodes as Lt. Disher. A 2002 interview with Jason Gray-Stanford refers to the character as Lt. Deakins. Apparently the writers and producers had a hard time deciding on an appropriate name.
(edit)
This episode is the first half of the two-hour pilot movie, available on DVD as of June 24, 2003.

Monk: I love my hands; even though I don't use the left one as much... I still love it.
(edit) Monk: Unless I'm wrong, which, you know, I'm not... (edit) Stottlemeyer: How does he do it? I have two eyes, I see everything that he sees, but... I don't see what he sees. (edit) Monk: (looking at a crime scene) Stove.
Lt. Gitomer: Over here. It's in the kitchen.
Monk: No... I mean my stove. I-I think I left it on. (edit) Sharona: How does it feel, always being right?
Monk: Terrible. (edit)

Mr Monk has shown that he has an impeccable memory when he remembered where all the pins went on the board but he can't remember how to make Chicken Pot Pie?
(edit)
In the extreme closeups of Monk replacing the pins in the map (15:36), we are actually seeing a shot of pins being pulled out, run in reverse.
(edit)
In the board room, when Monk and the campaign director are swinging the map back and forth (just before the pins fly off), the back of the map is alternately blank and covered with a counterweight.
(edit)
Captain Stottlemeyer says, "She was shot. He was stabbed." In fact it was the other way around, as Stottlemeyer knows.
(edit)
Just before St. Claire's bodyguard is shot, St. Claire and his wife can be seen moving to shake hands with his supporters on his left-hand side, yet a second later when the shooting happens, St. Claire and his wife are on the other side of the lectern.
