Mr. Monk and the Candidate (2)

Episode Number: 2    Season Num: 1    First Aired: Friday July 12, 2002    Prod Code: T1100B
(Continued from Part One) The police get a lead on the would-be assassin, but he manages to escape, in part because of Monk's fear of heights. Sharona convinces the deputy mayor to let Monk continue his investigation despite Captain Stottlemeyer's objections. After Monk has gathered the suspects together to recreate the crime scene, the hitman takes a shot at his accomplice and Sharona, playing Lois Lane, follows him into a sewer. Overcoming his revulsion, Monk goes in after them, placing Kleenex on the rungs of the ladder to protect his hands and feet on the way down. But Kleenex won't protect his shoes or the cuffs of his pants from the filthy, six-inch deep water. This novel act of courage moves Monk one step closer to recovering his emotional stability--and getting his old job back.

Notes

add »
This episode is the second half of the pilot movie and has not yet been presented as an independent episode. Captain Stottlemeyer's assistant is still, of course, referred to as Lt. Deacon rather than Lt. Disher. (edit)

Quotes

add »
(about Sharona)
Monk: Who does she think she is, Lois Lane? (edit)
Monk: What kind of dancing did you do in Atlantic City?
Sharona: Ballroom. (edit)
Sharona: So he lied. Everybody embellishes their resume. (edit)
Lt. Deacon: What Monk does is a parlor trick. (edit)
Stottlemeyer: Sharona quit? You mean Monk's alone, out there in public? (edit)

Trivia

add »
How did Monk get the gun out of Deacon's (Disher's) holster? Don't they have some sort of lock to prevent that sort of thing from happening? Isn't it a criminal offence to even touch a police officer's gun? (edit)
In the assassination scene, we hear the gunshot before the bullet hits, but bullets travel faster than sound does. Same goes when the police are hiding behind the police car. The glass should have shattered before we hear the sound of the gunfire. (edit)
Monk was able to link two seemingly unconnected murders by the common smell of a particular brand of cigarettes. If the killer smoked at a murder scene, he would surely also smoke in his own apartment. Yet when Monk arrived at his door along with the police, he apparently didn't notice what would certainly be a strong smell of that brand of cigarette. Furthermore, the fact the suspect's shoes had scuffmarks despite his being in a wheelchair is irrelevant. He would most likely have continued to wear the same shoes in his wheelchair that he wore before the accident that paralyzed him. (edit)
In the scene where Monk and Sharona visit Trudy's grave, the shadowy figure of a man can be seen kneeling behind another grave stone. He appears to be a crew member rather than an extra. (edit)
