I thought the pilot was alright, but this episode really showed where this show is heading. The storyline was good, well thought out, with a clever villian and an ending that left you wanting more. :)
Character development continued nicely in this episode, revealing more about both Beth and Mick's characters. Mick is obviously very protective of Beth and women in general, as illustrated by this episode. He also has a bit of a temper, which becomes more and more obvious. His vulnerable side shows at the end of the episode, not wanting Beth to see him in his vampire state, obviously ashamed. Amazing acting from McLoughlin there, as I just wanted to rush into the screen and hug him.
Beth was marvellous in this episode too.Still a little unsure on Mick, but she can't stop thinking about him. The tension is slowly building between these two. This one also showed that Beth is willing to put her career on the line to help a friend, by harbouring Mick in her house, and willing to defy her boyfriend. She also puts herself in danger to save Mick.
The ending was cleverly done by the writers. Beth finding out Mick is a vampire? She is shocked and confused, he is vulnerable and scared. Good relationship builder. Literally dying for next weeks episode now. :D
Only complaint is the car scenes. It's a little too obvious that a green screen is behind the actors, making them look like they've been pasted into the scene as an afterthought.
This show is going places! ;)
Here comes the adversary. hide show
Ah ... this is an episode with a lot of teeth. I do love the viciousness of Lee Jay in contrast to the sweetness and empathy of the book author. In addition, I like the way the writers tied in all he characters. How Beth was friends with the author and how Mick had a past altercation with Lee Jay. Obviously this was done for simplicity, as there would be no reason for Mick to work with Beth again without the connections. Again we see obvious tensions between Mick and Beth with certainly spices up the show. In addition, Beth's significant other Josh is introduced to us and he's an additional complex character. The shows shaping up real nice. Double Thumbs Up.

In this episode, we see what Mick was like before he swore off biting his food. Young and arrogant, he was more involved in Josef's world, attending parties and drinking blood from the women who offered themselves to him. Someone threatening his client? Simply rough him up a bit, add a few threats...problem solved.
A well-written episode that shows how Mick has changed over the years. We see his arrogant side and his vulnerable side, and Alex O'Loughlin plays both very well. There is excellent interaction between Mick and Beth, and we see Beth's struggle to trust Mick.
The final scene between Mick and Beth was quite powerful. One wonders how many takes it took to get it just right. In one sentence Alex manages to convey fear, dismay, defeat, disgust and soul-baring honesty. Dismay that Beth has seen Mick as a vampire; fear of what she might think; defeated in the attempts to keep his secret. Underlying all of the emotions, you can hear the disgust that he has for himself and what he is.
Out of the past shows what happens when a vampire doesn't get the job done the first time! hide show
In out of the past Mick St.John is confronted by Lee jay Spaulding, a murderer he helped put away. Mick had revealed himself to Lee Jay with the intent to kill him, for having murdered Mick's client, Lee Jays wife. When Mick doesn't get the chance to kill him, Lee Jay is put away for 25yrs. Unknown to Mick Lee Jay spends his 25yrs plotting a revange against Mick. Armed with the knowledge of what Mick is, he sets out to frame him for assaulting him. Now wanted for attacking Lee Jay, Mick must clear his name, with the help of Beth, and a reluctant Josh. The last scene of this episode is my favorite part. Mick's true identity is discovered by Beth. in an ending that makes me cry every time!
Atlast, now she knows who he is.
A very revealing episode, full of suspence.

I really enjoyed the suspense in this episode as it was a very personal thing that had been told in the criminals eyes to everyone and believed by them. I love this series so much and its great how they do the flashbacks. I have always loved a movie of tv show episode with flashbakcs. I think it gives it a great storyline to stick to and helps with the structure of the episode. My favouirte parts in this episode were, of course, the flashbacks, in other words his thoughts. And i also loved the bit when he was almost killed by the criminal and saved by the woman whom he saved when she was little. The next episode should be a good one and it will be interesting to see whether she sticks by his side now she knows or goes her seperate way.
Great episode. Keep up the good work.
