"The Mortal Cure" opens with Beth as she walks into an office remembering the day Josh was shot right before her eyes. An officer tells her that she needs to sign a witness statement and mentions that Mick St. John took some heroic measures to save Josh. Just as she was about to leave the office, she runs into Mick, whom she ignores.

Mick follows Beth and they soon get caught in an argument about why he didn't turn Josh into vampire. Mick explains that being a vampire is a curse and Beth tells him that she's really trying hard to understand it.

Mick returns to his building and senses that vampires are waiting for him. He knows this because when vampires age, their scent becomes more potent with decay. He goes inside to find two men at the balcony, a black eyed vamp and another vampire that is freakishly short. They enlist Mick's help in order to find Coraline, though Mick initially says he doesn't know her. But then, the black eyed vampire shows him a marriage certificate and Mick confronts them why they want her found.

After the mysterious vampires left, Mick goes to Joseph to dig up some information about them. Although Joseph has never dealt with them, he reveals to Mick that he knows one of them is Lance, the black eyed vampire, and warns Mick not to get involve with the notorious being.

Later, Mick goes to the security room at the hospital and asks the guard to show him the tapes of the day Coraline disappeared. With a little bribery, Mick gets his hands on the tapes and finds out that there's another vampire, Cynthia Davis, the day that Coraline disappeared at the hospital. He now knows that Cynthia is the one who helped Coraline escape.

At Logan's apartment, Mick shows up while Logan is playing Guitar Hero and asks him to locate Cynthia. After Logan gives him the location of Cynthia's hotel, Mick goes to see her and questions her about where Coraline is and why she's in town. Cynthia tells Mick that Coraline is in Europe, but Mick knows that she is lying. As Mick was leaving her room, Logan calls with some information about an address where Cynthia is running a business.

Meanwhile, Beth is still reeling in her own private world while she mourns for the loss of her boyfriend Josh. She receives Josh's stuff from the DA's office and starts going through his date book where she finds a name of a woman, Celeste, and a scheduled date. Beth, who now suspects Josh of cheating, attempts to find out who this woman is. She goes to a restaurant where Josh was supposed to meet her only to discover that Celeste was helping Josh re-set his grandmother's diamond. Upon learning that Josh was going to propose to her before he died, Beth becomes even more grief-stricken.

Mick turns up at the storage facility Cynthia was having the imports delivered too and finds Coraline there working with a scientist. They are discussing the compound for the cure and Mick discovers that Coraline is a vampire again. Lance shows up and brutally cuts the head of the scientist that stands between him and Coraline. Lance says something about Coraline being irresponsible with the "compound" and mentions the possibility of another reign of terror. Mick jumps down and saves Coraline, consequently setting Lance's hand of fire. However, Lance's hand heals itself and Mick gets knocked out to the ground. When he wakes up, Coraline and Lance are nowhere to be found.

Puzzled about Lance's ability to regenerate, Mick seeks the help of Joseph again. He returns to his apartment and finds Beth waiting for him to return. Mick invites her inside and she tells him about the woman she met and the ring she had been working on. Beth admits she is confused. Coraline suddenly arrives as Mick's apartment and rushes into Mick's arms. As Mick hugs her back, Beth feels uncomfortable and then leaves.

Coraline finally explains to Mick about the cure and where it came from. She reveals that during the French Revolution there were seven siblings of royal blood who were vampires. They came up with a compound that would masks the traits of vampirism temporarily so that they could avoid having their heads removed. She puts some of the cure into Mick's blood stream in his arm and Mick starts to feel human again.

Coraline asks Mick to help her leave town and hide. Mick agrees to help her, but as they are walking through an alley, Lance appears and beats the crap out of Mick. It turns out that Lance is Coraline's brother and Coraline was the seventh sibling in the royal blood line, and that the royal family is angry at her for passing on their noble bloodline to Mick without permission. Just as Lance was about to kill Mick, Coraline ultimately sacrifices herself for him. Lance paralyzes her and takes her away.

A now human Mick makes his way back to his apartment and indulges in eating a table filled with real food. He then settles in on the couch as he doesn't have a real bed to sleep in.

The next day, Mick goes to Josh's funeral looking like a hot mess. Beth asks him if he's human and he says yes, temporarily. Mick tells Beth that Coraline is gone and it wasn't meant to be. Beth tells him she knows how that feels. Beth asks him how it feels to be human and he says it's amazing. Just as the funeral starts, Beth and Mick stare at each other across the casket, and the episode ends.
