10 Things I Hate About You

Movie Summary

Director:
Gil Junger
Released:
1999
Rating:
PG-13

In the world of Padua High School, Sophomore Bianca Stratford is desired by all and her senior sister Kat is feared by them. The only thing that is stopping Bianca from enjoying her prime teen dating years is her father's new rule - she can't date until her sister does. When transfer student Cameron instantly falls for fair Bianca, he devices a plan with his new friend Michael to both get her to fall for him and get her sister to date. They trick pompous school heartthrob Joey Donner into paying misunderstood school bad boy Patrick Verona to tame and court the shrewish Kat. All goes well until the plan works too well and the truth comes out.

Metacritic Score

  • 100

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas

Lutz's dialogue is consistently sharp and snappy, and the large cast forms a sparkling ensemble under Junger's adept direction.

  • 60

The New York Times Stephen Holden

If it's all very clever for a teen-age film, it also feels terribly forced.

  • 60

    Variety Dennis Harvey

10 Things doesn't take much time before ditching its pitch idea in favor of a mishmash of newer formulas, never quite settling on a cogent game plan or directorial tone.
