2009
Rating:
PG-13
12 Rounds (Unrated) is a 2009 suspense thriller involving a life-or-death game of revenge played out on the streets of picturesque New Orleans. Criminal mastermind Miles Jackson (Ashley Scott) has escaped from prison and wants revenge for the death of his girlfriend, Erica Kessen (Taylor Cole). Miles blames Police Detective Danny Fisher (WWE wrestling star John Cena) for killing her, when it actually was an accident. He surprises Miles with a call on his cell phone and lays out his evil plan. He has kidnapped Danny's girlfriend, Molly Porter (Ashley Scott), but won't kill her if Danny completes 12 rounds of a nearly impossible game that also means the death of innocent citizens. Meanwhile, federal agents want to recapture Miles, even if it means the death of Molly. This unrated version provides additional action sequences and more violence. Director Renny Harlin ("Die Hard 2") provides plenty of heart-stopping action, explosions and twists in this taut race against the clock drama.

There are, as you may have guessed, 12 rounds of this arbitrary nonsense. Annoying as the conceit may be, it neatly functions as a means to gauge how much is left to endure.

The viewer, even from a seated position, deserves a championship belt for surviving this overlong actioner.
