1408 is a white-knuckle horror film based on a story by Stephen King about a ghost investigator who risks his sanity, and his life, to debunk a myth surrounding a hotel room. Cynical author Mike Enslin (John Cusack) has made a name for himself, and a small fortune, by traveling the world to debunk famous hauntings and legends. After the tragic death of his daughter, Enslin receives a mysterious postcard with a message warning him not to stay in room 1408 of the Dolphin Hotel. He smells a new story and books the room, despite the protests of the hotel manager. Enslin retires to the room where he is subject to a number of bizarre, but explainable, occurrences; however, it does not take long until his rational mind begins to fail him. He soon finds that he is no longer the jaded skeptic and must come to terms with the ghosts of his past if he wants to check out with his life intact.

In the grand scheme of things, the Dolphin Hotel is no Overlook, but it's no cheesy slaughter motel either.
