The movie is set in Edinburgh in three distinct periods in the life of Frankie Mac (Kevin McKidd), a boy who watches the world around him drench itself in alcohol. During his teenage years, Frankie acts out in violent ways and is known as a gang leader. After a chance meeting with a young woman, Helen (Laura Fraser), he begins to leave his identity as a gang member in the past. However, even falling for Helen cannot distance him from the demons of his past, that return to haunt him and any potential relationship. As his life starts to take a wrong turn again, he falls back into the familiar pattern of violence and alcohol making it hard for him to escape the vicious circle of a lifestyle that keeps pulling him back in.
