1776 is a 1972 musical film based on the stage musical of the same name written by Peter Stone and Sherman Edwards. The musical revolves around the events of the Second Continental Congress and the representatives of each of the thirteen original colonies. The story culminates with the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The musical was critically acclaimed, winning the Tony award for Best Musical. The film version retained much of the original all-star Broadway cast including William Daniels as John Adams, Howard Da Silva as Ben Franklin, Ken Howard as Thomas Jefferson, Blythe Danner as Martha Jefferson, David Ford as John Hancock, and countless others. The film version garnered several nominations at the Golden Globes and Academy Awards.
