187 is a 1997 suspense thriller starring Samuel L. Jackson as a traumatized teacher in a gritty school environment. New York high school teacher Trevor Garfield (Samuel L. Jackson) barely survives a brutal attack by students. When he is ready to return to work, he moves to Los Angeles as an antidote to his haunting memories. Unfortunately, Garfield finds himself in another tough school environment with a strong gang presence. Haunting memories from his previous attack keep surfacing and Garfield begins to react like a spooked cat around the students. Garfield then endures the hostility of two Latino gang members, Benny (Lobo Sebastian) and Cesar (Clifton Gonzalez Gonzalez). His fellow teachers, Ellen (Kelly Rowan) and Dave (John Heard), try to reassure him by telling him that all the teachers receive death threats. Garfield tries to make connections with the more motivated students, but even his favorite Rita Martinez (Karina Arroyave) treats him with suspicion when he tries to encourage her to go to college. When Benny gets murdered, the suspicion of his gang and the police begins to turn towards the high-strung teacher.moreless
