Movie Summary

Director:

Released:
1999
Rating:

200 Cigarettes is a comedy that takes place on December 31, 1981. In the film, Monica (Martha Plimpton) is throwing a New Year's Eve party but is afraid that no one will come. The film follows her friends on their various adventures leading up to their arrival at the party. Val (Christina Ricci) and Stephie (Gaby Hoffman) meet Dave (Guillermo Diaz) and Tom (Casey Affleck) at a bar and suspect they are drug dealers. Lucy (Courtney Love) and Kevin (Paul Rudd) are two best friends who believe they may be falling in love with each other. Cindy (Kate Hudson) and Jack (Jay Mohr) are on an awkward dinner date. All of their stories are ultimately united by the Disco Cabbie (Dave Chappelle) who drives them through New York on their way to the party. On a night where anything can happen, 200 Cigarettes proves that what you expect or want to happen isn't necessarily what does.

Metacritic Score

  • 70

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas

A light comedy, pure and simple (and hardly unfamiliar), but its makers sustain its energy through the unraveling of an intricate plot and bring to it a certain edge through a witt...

  • 60

The New York Times Elvis Mitchell

Gathers a partyful of young players and barely gives them enough of a story line to puff on, but it gets by on personality anyhow.

  • 10

    Variety Todd McCarthy

Dismally unfunny...It's clear from the first few minutes that the performers are fighting an uphill battle against lame material, and the situation never improves as pic labors on.
