2001 Maniacs is the 2005 contemporary sequel to the 1964 schlock horror classic from the Wizard of Gore Herschell Gordon Lewis, this time spearheaded by talented genre filmmaker Tim Sullivan. A group of college students take a detour on their way to spring break and get lost. They find themselves in Pleasant Valley, Georgia (population: 2001), a rural community full of southern gentlemen, country bumpkins, and eccentric hillbillies headed by the overly hospitable Mayor Buckman (Robert Englund). They find that they're not the only people who took a wrong detour and are joined by more hopeful college partiers, including 'gasp' a Negro (Mayor Buckman words). The students are taken by the southern hospitality of the locals and decide to stay for the town's annual 'Guts N' Glory' Jubilee, a two-day celebration of dancing, games, and of course, the world famous Pleasant Valley barbecue. Little do the students know, they happen to BE the main course.
