2010: The Year We Make Contact is a science fiction film directed by Peter Hyams that acts as a sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s epic 2001: A Space Odyssey, where the American Discovery One’s Jupiter mission suffered from a malfunction of the artificial kind when HAL 9000, a sentient on-board computer meant to make life easier but obviously did not do its job as four out of the five astronauts were killed. The blame was placed on Heywood Floyd (Roy Scheider) and the incident was believed to be closed until a strain between the United States and the Soviet Union pushes for each nation to seek out the truth to the Discovery One mishap. Joining the joint mission is the ship designer Walter Curnow (John Lithgow) and HAL’s creator Chandra (Bob Balaban). What Russian captain Tanya Kirbuk (Helen Mirren), cosmonaut Max Brailovsky (Elya Baskin), Curnow, and Chandra discover in not only the orbit of Jupiter but in the files of HAL ultimately leads to just what exactly that black monolith of 2001: A Space Odyssey means to the crew of the Alexei Leonov and Earth.moreless
