30 Days of Night is a 2007 horror film centered around a small Alaskan town haunted by bloodthirsty vampires. The film is based on a comic book mini series written by Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith. David Slade (Hard Candy, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse), a connoisseur in music video direction, directed the film with help from Stuart Beattie and Brian Nelson. Every year, Barrow, Alaska experiences thirty days of darkness, during which there is literally no sun. As the town prepares for its annual adventure, strange events begin to take place in and around town. Who are these visitors dressed in black, and how do they have so much energy despite the dreaded lack of sunlight? Sheriff Eben Oleson (Josh Hartnett) is on their trail and soon discovers the truth behind the cloaked clan: they are vampires preying on the town while it endures it's month of darkness. Can Oleson stop these beasts before they feast on innocent lives? The movie also co-stars Melissa George, Ben Foster and Danny Huston.

Metacritic Score

  • 50

    Variety Dennis Harvey

Excels at bloodthirsty action, though dialogue and human-interest aspects are a tad anemic. Result is a mixed bag but has a catchy premise and quite enough splatter to satisfy gore...

  • 40

    Los Angeles Times John Anderson

The movie thus moves from truly creepy to truly inane, which is, unfortunately, all too common in films of this ilk.

  • 30

    The New York Times

The performers have little to do besides spill and drink blood in this tedious, inconsequential B picture. The sun doesn't rise nearly fast enough.
