32 Short Films About Glenn Gould is an offbeat 1993 biopic of the celebrated classical pianist Glenn Gould (Colm Feore). Gould was known as an eccentric, unexpectedly retiring from the stage at the age of 31, and this film mirrors that with eccentric pacing and a non-linear narrative. It consists of 32 short vignettes, ranging from under a minute to over six minutes. This approach was inspired by the structure of Johann Sebastian Bach's Goldberg Variations, Gould's first celebrated recording. The film includes a short animation of spheres moving to Gould's music, interviews with real-life acquaintances of Gould, like violinist Yahudi Menuhin, and recreations of the important events in Gould's life, including that last live concert appearance in 1964. With few exceptions, the soundtrack consists of Gould's own recordings. 32 Short Films About Glenn Gould was critically acclaimed, winning four Genie awards, Canada's version of the Academy Awards, and was directed by Francois Girard, who collaborated on the script with Don McKeller.moreless
