40 Carats is a gripping romantic drama that centers around forty-year-old Ann Stanley (Liv Ullmann) and her eventful love life. While on vacation in Greece, Ann has a fling with a man who is barely twenty two years old named Albert (Edward Albert). She returns to New York without the man and with thoughts of him encumbering her mind. She figures that she will never see him again and tries her hardest to get thoughts of him out of her mind. One day, she hears the doorbell ring and answers it only to find that Albert is standing on the other side of the door. The catch though, is that Albert is waiting for a date with Ann's daughter Trina (Deborah Raffin). Both of them are shocked, but Albert goes on the date with Trina and Ann has to try to deal with her feelings for him once again. With a bit of pushing from her family and friends Ann must decide whether or not to date the young man or to forget that he ever existed.
