40 Days and 40 Nights is a 2002 Michael Lehmann romantic comedy about a young man who attempts to abstain from sex for 40 days during Lent. Matt (Josh Hartnett) is still obsessed with his girlfriend Nichole (Vinessa Shaw), who is newly engaged. Matt confides in his brother John (Adam Trese), who is also training to be a priest, that he is going to take a vow of celibacy. John warns him that celibacy is easier said that done. After taking the vow, Matt's co-worker and roommate Ryan (Paulo Costanzo) creates an office pool to see how long Matt can last without sex. In the meantime, Matt strikes up a relationship with Erica (Shannyn Sossamon), who ultimately discovers his vow. Needless to say, Matt's celibacy causes issues in his budding relationship with Erica. To make matters worse, Ryan and his fellow co-workers repeatedly attempt to pressure Matt into breaking his vow. Now at his weakest point, Matt is forced to see if he can tough it out or if he will ultimately give into his lust for Erica.
