42 Up is a documentary in which director Michael Apted tracks the lives of a group of English-born people from when they were 7 years old in 1964 and then revisits their lives when they are 42 years old in 1999. This movie studies the progression of each individual in the group and how their lives changed from adolescence into adulthood. Apted further analyzes the hopes and dreams that these people had as children and how those hopes and dreams translated into their adult lives. This documentary is filled with raw truth, an engaging outlook on what really happens to people through the years. As seen through the documentary, not everyone gets the job that they have wanted, not everyone gets that perfect spouse, but on the other hand, several of the group end up with very successful lives. Similar to other "Up" documentaries, 42 Up encourages the viewer to reflect on their own lives in a new light.

Metacritic Score

  • 100

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

This series should be sealed in a time capsule. It is on my list of the 10 greatest films of all time, and is a noble use of the medium.

  • 90

    The New York Times

When this hugely ambitious project began, it was a longitudinal study of class divisions among English schoolchildren. But time and persistence have turned it into much more.

  • 90

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas

Time is truly on Apted's side because the passing of time not surprisingly brings a richer, deeper perspective with each new segment.
