49 Up is the latest documentary from the continuing '7 up' series by British filmmaker Miachael Apted. He started the series om 1964, interviewing a diverse group of 7 year olds living in England so as to give visual proof to the old adage "give me a child until he is seven and I will give you the man." Apted vowed to track how their lives progressed every 7 years and indeed he has. Fast forward to the present and all those kids are now 49 years old. Have they followed the ambitious dreams and goals of their childhoods or have those fallen away as their real lives have taken over? It varies from person to person. Some have enduring marriages, others have ended. Some are now even grandparents. They are charity workers, politicians, cab drivers. They do not all feel comfortable about the way the series has shown their lives to the world, but regardless of what they may or may not feel, their lives reflect deeply upon all who watch the series.moreless

Suzy's marriage, Nick's divorce, Paul's work history: none of it is my or anyone else's business. But these things -- these people -- have become, through Mr. Apted's films, a vita...

49 Up is more than a deeply satisfying movie; it's a reminder of the wonder contained in ordinary lives.

It doesn't make for involving drama, unless the audience is already invested in the subjects' fortunes. Thus, 49 Up will have more appeal for long-time followers than newcomers.
