50 Dead Men Walking, directed by Kari Skogland, is a 1997 dramatic thriller based loosely on the life story of Marty McGartland. The film takes placed during the fours years between 1987-1991. In the film, Martin (Jim Sturgess) is a 21-year-old successful street smart hustler from West Belfast who is recruited by Fergus (Ben Kingsley), a British police agent for a secret mission. The mission Martin is offered includes infiltrating the IRA (Provisional Irisih Republican Army) as a spy during the height of the Northern Irish Conflict. Excited about the opportunity, Martin quickly infiltrates the organization and works his way up to a volunteer position where he promptly begins providing the British police with intel. Soon Martin realizes he may be in over his head, but he has no way out. Martin's handler does not want to help him leave. Other informants are missing and in danger and Martin must do whatever he can to get out alive.moreless
