7 Plus Seven is a documentary that follows the lives of fourteen British students from different callings and backgrounds. The film was the first of its kind when it was televised in 1964. Never before had such a large undertaking been attempted; it was a seven-year ordeal. Director Michael Apted gives a glimpse into the minds of the seven subjects as they give their own personal accounts as to the major changes in their lives from the time they were seven to the time they were fourteen. One of the children is Suzy Lusk, who came from an affluent family and went to boarding school. Her parents separated at the time of filming when she was seven. Another is William Nicholas Hitchon, who was raised on a small farm in Arncliff. He studied at Oxford University before traveling to the USA to pursue his dream of becoming a nuclear physicist. 7 Plus Seven has received enormous praise over the years, and was originally meant to document the rigid class structure in the United Kingdom. Before filming it was theorized that the paths of these children would be set at birth, depending on the social situations of their families.moreless
