A Beautiful Mind is the 2001 Oscar winning adaptation of Sylvia Nasar's bestselling book, based on the life of her troubled and gifted husband, directed by superstar filmmaker/actor Ron Howard (Cocoon, Apollo 13). John Nash (Russell Crowe) is one of the most brilliant mathematicians on the planet. He teaches at MIT, has a beautiful wife named Alicia (Jennifer Connelly), publishes a paper on Economics that revolutionized the stock market, and moonlights as a secret agent for the US Government. According to a man named Parcher, a Nazi-built atomic bomb is to be detonated somewhere in the United States and the location is in certain newspapers which John must decode. Technical problem, there is no bomb, no man named Parcher, and nothing in the newspapers. It's all in John's head. Because while John Nash is one of the most brilliant minds in the world, he suffers from schizophrenia and delusions. His whole Spy mission is made up; his best friend Charles and his daughter are make-believe. Worse of all, John doesn't know he has delusions and therefore believes that it's all real.

The movie can -- indeed, should -- be intellectually rejected, but you can't quite banish it from your mind.

There is more to admire in A Beautiful Mind than you might suspect, but less than its creators believe. When the film does succeed, it almost seems to do so despite itself.
