A Breed Apart is a 1984 suspense drama with ecological themes. Reclusive Vietnam vet Jim Malden (Rutger Hauer) has given up on humanity after losing his wife and child. He lives on a remote island that provides a home for rare birds, and doesn't mind shooting hunters with a crossbow to protect the rare birds. When J.P. Whittier (Donald Pleasance), a wealthy and obsessive oologist (collector of rare eggs), hears of a new bald eagle subspecies, he must have a specimen even if it means extinction for the birds. He offers mountain climber Mike Walker (Powers Boothe) a huge sum of money to do his dirty work. Walker poses as a bird watcher and befriends Malden. He also encourages Malden to befriend the island's shopkeeper, Stella Clayton (Kathleen Turner), so that he can have access to the eagle's nest. But friendship goes both ways, and Walker may learn to value something more than money.
