A Civil Action is a 1998 courtroom drama based on a true story with John Travolta starring as a personal injury attorney fighting against corporate giants. Twelve children have died of leukemia and their parents, including Anne Anderson (Kathleen Quinlan), blame the toxic waste dumped by two corporate entities: W.R. Beatrice and Grace. At a minimum, the parents want an apology, but also consult attorney Jan Schlichtmann (John Travolta) about a lawsuit. Jan likes the possible big money the case could bring, but debates whether his personal injury practice can absorb all the legal costs unless he wins the case. Representing the Beatrice Corporation, opposing counsel Jerome Facher (Robert Duvall) is an imposing and sly competitor, who contends that there was no pollution. Usually Jan takes cases because they are quick and easy to settle, but decides to risk a full courtroom battle on behalf of the heartbroken parents. Steven Zaillian writes and directs this legal thriller based on Jonathan Harr's bestseller.
