A Foreign Field follows two men as they converge on Normandy in search of answers to questions that have troubled them for nearly fifty years. Englishman Cyril (Leo McKern) and American Waldo (John Randolph) are both veterans of the pivotal D-Day landing at Normandy, a turning point of World War II. Now elderly, they return -- Cyril with his nearly mute and childlike companion Amos (Alec Guinness) and Waldo with his daughter Beverly (Geraldine Chaplin) and son-in-law Ralph (Edward Herrmann). They are searching, among other things, for the woman whom both men loved during the war, the glamorous Angelique (Jeanne Moreau). But it is another woman, the recently widowed Lisa (Lauren Bacall), come to visit the grave of her brother, who helps Cyril and Waldo come to a greater understanding of the meaning of sacrifice, companionship, and courage. Directed by Charles Sturridge, this movie was made with the help of famed actor Guinness, and first ran on the BBC to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the D-Day landing.moreless
