A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum is a 1966 musical comedy directed by Richard Lester. In ancient Rome, Pseudolus (Zero Mostel) is the conniving, lazy slave of wealthy Senex (Michael Hordern), his wife Domina (Patricia Jessel), and their son Hero (Michael Crawford). After Pseudolus learns that Hero is in love with a slave named Philia (Annette Andre), he tells Hero that he will help him win Philia's love in exchange for his freedom. When Hero agrees to the deal, the pair head to the home of Marcus Lycus (Phil Silvers), Philia's master. Upon arriving, they soon discover that Lycus has already sold Philia to Captain Miles Gloriosus (Leon Greene) of the Roman army. Gloriosus, who is on a campaign in Crete, has not yet collected Philia. Therefore, cunning Pseudolus tells Lycus that Philia could have the plague and convinces him to let Hero care for her in Gloriosus's absence. When Philia falls in love with Hero, Pseudolus devises a comedic plan to help Hero keep the maiden from the clutches of Gloriosus.moreless
