2006
Rating:
PG-13
A Good Year is a romantic comedy about an English businessman who travels to a French chateau to settle the affairs of his dead uncle. When Max Skinner (Russell Crowe) learns that his Uncle Henry (Albert Finney) has died, he rushes to France, intending to sell his uncle's home as quickly as possible. His plans are dashed, however, when a young woman named Christie Roberts (Abbie Cornish) arrives, claiming to be Henry's illegitimate daughter. Max and Christie settle into an uneasy friendship at the same time that Max begins a romantic relationship with his childhood friend, Fanny Chenal (Marion Cotillard). As Max becomes increasingly fond of his life in the French countryside, he must figure out a way to balance his new life with the old one that awaits back in London. Ultimately, he must decide what is more important to him -- the chaos and emotion of France or the money and predictability of London.

A simple repast consisting of sometimes strained slapsticky comedy, a sweet romance and a life lesson learned, this little picnic doesn't amount to much but goes down easily enough.
