A Hero Ain't Nothin' But a Sandwich is a 1978 drama film that follows the story of a troubled teen, Benji (Larry B. Scott). He lives with his mother, Sweets (Cicely Tyson) and grandmother, Mrs. Bell (Helen Martin). On the outside, Benji appears to be a normal teenager, but on the inside, he suffers from deep pain. It is clear that this pain is from the fact that his father left when he was younger, along with his dislike of his mother's boyfriend, Butler (Paul Winfield). In an attempt to bury his pain, Benji spends more time with his friend, Carwell (Erin Blunt). It is Carwell who introduces him to drugs, mainly heroin. Benji soon becomes hooked on heroin, changing his normally calm, peaceful demeanor to an angry, sometimes violent one. The film follows Benji's story as his family tries to come to terms with his drug use and deep emotional scars.
