Movie Summary

Director:
David Cronenberg
Released:
2005
Rating:
R

Tom Stall is an average American family man, the owner of Millbrook, Indiana's local diner. Tom is abruptly thrust into the spotlight when he shoots and kills two men who were terrorizing his staff and customers during a robbery. After the story is picked up by the national media, Tom's idyllic life is further interrupted when a mysterious man appears in town. Carl Fogarty is convinced Tom is lying about his identity. In fact, Carl is quite sure that Tom is actually Joey Cusack, a vicious killer who ran with the Irish Mob in Philadelphia. Tom denies these claims and reassures his wife, Edie, that everything is fine. Carl isn't finished with Tom, though, and shows up at Tom's house with a car full of thugs and Joe's son, Jack, as a hostage. The family man once again shows incredible skills with a gun when he shoots and kills the men holding his son. Tom's precision shooting even has Edie questioning the truth. Who is Tom Stall?

Metacritic Score

  • 100

The New York Times Manohla Dargis

A masterpiece of indirection and pure visceral thrills, David Cronenberg's latest mindblower, A History of Violence, is the feel-good, feel-bad movie of the year.

  • 90

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

A ticking time bomb of a movie, a gripping, incendiary, casually subversive piece of work that marries pulp watchability with larger concerns without skipping a beat.

  • 70

    Variety Todd McCarthy

Lack of depth, complexity or strangeness make this a relatively routine entry for the director.
