A Huey P. Newton story is a movie about the life of embattled Black Panther Party co-founder Huey P. Newton. Directed by Spike Lee, the movie is an adaptation of the one-man Broadway show starring Roger Guenveur Smith. The movie uses newsreels and archival footage to paint an authentic portrait of the iconic leader's troubled life. As a youth, Newton developed a sense of self-awareness, which led him down the path of activism and social justice. The film explores the thoughts and philosophies of the leader as well as his reasons for founding the movement. An activist, Newton demanded equal treatment and full rights for African Americans. The Black Panther Party was often met with suspicion and abuse from entities neither ready nor willing to afford blacks their full rights as Americans. The movie is excellent in humanizing Newton and creating a softer image of a man who simply wanted better for his community.
