Movie Summary

Danny Boyle
A Life Less Ordinary is a black comedy that features crime, revenge, and true love. Robert Lewis (Ewan McGregor) is a down-on-his-luck janitor. Despite having big plans for his life, he can't seem to catch a break. He aspires to be a wealthy novelist, but immediately after explaining this dream to his coworkers he is fired. Later that night, his girlfriend Lily (K.K. Dodds) breaks up with him. Robert decides he has nothing left to lose and goes to confront his former employer Mr. Naville (Ian Holm). Building security begins assaulting Robert, but he manages to get one of their guns and kidnaps Naville's daughter Celine (Cameron Diaz). Celine has a chance to escape, but instead stays with her kidnapper. Robert eventually determines that Celine is looking for more excitement in her life, which is why she helps him orchestrate a ransom demand. Now Robert must find a way to keep Celine interested, while trying to escape a pair of bounty hunters that are much more than they seem. Danny Boyle directed this 1997 film.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 60

The New York Times Elvis Mitchell

Mr. Boyle's brand of heaven-sent love story comes with a strange and whimsical mean streak. Tender thoughts and ha-ha shootings don't automatically mix.

  • 50

    Variety Derek Elley

Part kooky romance, part screwball comedy, part quirky fantasy and part Roadrunner cartoon, this is a movie that has everything except an involving storyline and characters.

  • 40

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

But the result is no more than a forced fable, a self-consciously smarty-pants concoction that is too clever by half and too pleased with itself in the bargain.
