A Modern Affair is a romantic comedy that turns the conventions of the genre upside down, as hinted in its tagline "They met, fell in love, and had a baby. (Not necessarily in that order.)" Grace Rhodes (Lisa Eichhorn) is a highly successful but still lonely Manhattan executive who resorts to the services of a sperm bank to give her the baby she longs for. Having taken matters into her own hands, she chooses a donor anonymously from the clinic's "DNA menu." However, curiosity gets the best of her during her pregnancy, and with help from her best friend Elaine (Caroline Aaron), Rhodes seeks out the sperm donor, who turns out to be nature photographer Peter Kessler (Stanley Tucci) from upstate New York. Unexpectedly, the two characters discover a romantic attraction to each other in spite of their many differences, and they begin a journey that takes them from singleness to parenthood to love almost in spite of themselves.
