A Month by the Lake is a romantic comedy film set in Lake Como in Italy, before World War II. Miss Bentley (Vanessa Redgrave) is a middle-aged British woman who goes to Lake Como where she spent many summers with her family. With the recent passing of her father, Miss Bentley is looking for some peace and relaxation. Meanwhile, Major Wilshaw (Edward Fox) is a wealthy British engineer who also visits Lake Como. When Miss Bentley and Major Wilshaw meet, it seems as if there is an instant attraction. The two begin to spend time together, playing tennis matches and chatting. Things between the two seem to be going good until the arrival of Miss Beaumont (Uma Thurman), an American nanny. When she realizes Major Wilshaw is wealthy, she starts to make advances toward him. Major Wilshaw is forced to make a decision between the sweet and genuine Miss Bentley or the attractive, but dangerous Miss Beaumont.
