A New Life is the 1988 wryly comedic romance from actor, writer and director Alan Alda. It tells the story of Steve Giardino (Alda) and his wife of 26 years, Jackie (Ann-Margret), who divorces him. Steve goes to his suave friend, Mel (Hal Linden), for help in the dating department. The women that Mel suggests, however, are not the best matches for Steve. Jackie's friend Donna (Mary Kay Place) encourages her to look for new love interests as well. Though Jackie is ambivalent about dating again, a young, peppy sculptor, "Doc" (John Shea), takes an interest in her and they develop a romantic relationship. After having a heart attack on the tennis court (a result of too many dating snafus), Steve finally finds a new flame of his own in his young doctor, Kay Hutton (Veronica Hamel). Steve and Jackie find that even for middle-aged divorcees, life and love can still have a lot more excitement in store. The film also features Beatrice Alda, David Eisner and Victoria Snow.moreless
