A Shot in the Dark is a comedy from 1964 directed by Blake Edwards and is the second in the Pink Panther series. Inspector Clouseau (Peter Sellers) returns to solve another case. The bumbling detective is assigned, through a bureaucratic mix-up, to a high profile murder at the home of Paris billionaire Benjamin Balloon (George Sanders). Balloon's chauffeur has been shot by someone in the mansion. When Clouseau arrives on the scene, he learns that the maid Maria Gambrelli (Elke Sommer) was found in the locked room with a gun in her hand and the chauffeur's body at her feet. To everyone else it is obvious that the maid is the killer; Clouseau is not so sure. He pursues an alternative and much more complex path of clues hoping they lead to a different suspect. This irritates his boss Charles Dreyfus (Herbert Lom), who is convinced that Clouseau is not seeing the obvious solution because of the maid's extraordinarily good looks.moreless
