A Summer Story is a 1988 romantic drama about lost love from a short story by John Galsworthy. In 1904 England, Ashton (James Wilby), a London barrister injures himself while hiking on vacation in the Dartmoor countryside. He takes refuge at a nearby farmhouse, where Megan (Imogen Stubbs) lives with her aunt, Mrs. Narracombe (Susannah York), and her cousin Joe (Jerome Flynn). In spite of their class differences, Ashton and Megan fall in love, but Mrs. Narracombe's disapproval sends Ashton packing, but not before he vows to Megan that he will return. On his trip back home, Ashton meets an old school friend, Mr. Halliday (John Elmes), who invites him to a resort where Ashton immediately falls for Halliday's sister, Stella (Sophie Ward). When Megan unexpectedly shows up at the resort, Ashton avoids a confrontation by hiding and leaves Megan brokenhearted. Years later, he still thinks back to the summer in Dartmoor and decides to return.
