A Tragedy at Midnight is a 1942 murder mystery directed by Joseph Santley. It focuses on husband and wife Greg Sherman (John Howard) and Beth Sherman (Margaret Lindsay) as they investigate the murder of a local woman. Greg uses his popular radio show to solve crimes that the local police force is unable to solve. One day on his broadcast, he accurately accuses a criminal of a recent murder. The criminal happens to be listening to the broadcast however, and sets out to escape. A few days later, Greg wakes up not next to his wife, but next to the dead body of a woman, with the knife still stuck in her. Beth sees the scene and calls the police, who are all too happy to arrest Greg, who is a constant thorn in their side. Greg escapes however, and with his wife, sets out to investigate who really killed the woman and why.
