A Very Serious Person is a sentimental drama centered around an eccentric male nurse who fosters a meaningful bond with an emotionally obstinate teenage boy. This 2006 film was written and directed by Charles Busch, who also plays the lead role. Ambulant nurse Jan (Charles Busch) is assigned to take care of an elderly woman named Mrs. A (Polly Bergen) whose health is ailing due to terminal illness. He soon arrives at his clients house in Manhattan, where he is greeted by a thirteen year old boy named Gil (PJ Verhoest). As Mrs. A's condition gets worse, Jan finds himself mentoring Gil who prepares for the worst. Jan and Gil form a palpable bond - one which gives Gil a more mature perspective on life and one which allows Jan to recognize the emotions he usually conceals so eagerly. A Very Serious Person, not to be confused with the Coen Brothers' A Serious Man, is a touching picture which reminds us why we form meaningful ties with the people we love.moreless
