A Wake in Providence

Movie Summary

Director:
Rosario Roveto
Released:
1999
Rating:
R

A Wake in Providence is a comedy film directed by Rosario Roveto, Jr. that revolves around the quirks and antics of an Italian family in Providence, Rhode Island as the family comes together when the patriarch dies suddenly. For Anthony (Vincent Pagano), his return to the East Coast from his acting life in LA was full of apprehension. Knowing that his family was very traditional and a bit on the loud side, he fears bringing his girlfriend Alyssa (Victoria Rowell) solely because she is definitely not Italian, a big deal breaker for the older generation. Of course, his reaction is not too far off as everyone, including his grandmother (Kaye Kingston), holds a vote on whether Alyssa should be allowed to stay. Of course, that is not all the drama as his idiotic wannabe tough guys cousins (John Mariano and Billy Van Zandt) are paranoid enough to think they are wanted by the mob, his aunts (Adrienne Barbeau and Micole Mercurio) keep Alyssa from running with commentary on how to survive, and an uncle (Louis Guss) seems to have an unhealthy openness about the state of his testicles.

    Variety

Zesty indie comedy from Rhode Island is a winner, with ethnic humor easily mixing with universal truths about dealing with families.

The film aims for a light social satire but mainly falls flat. It feels more like a long-lost pilot for some never-aired 1970s sitcom or a misguided sequel to a Billy Joel song.
